I hope you caught last two Brazilian picks. Palmeiras started the new season with a 2-1 away win over Bragantino, middle-table team in second division. Palmeiras were unsustained in defence and let Bragantino to create several dangerous attacks. Palmeiras finished last season on 11th place and did not strenghten the roster a lot. The only brighter thing is that midfielder Valdivia is fit again and showed his magin in the first match. But the squad at all is on average level.

Portuguesa were the best team in Serie B last season and managed to earn a promotion to the top division. They kept most of the regulars from last season and it is highly possible that they will not take part in the relegation battle. Portuguesa lost in the first round 0-2 at home against Paulista. The team had problems with the ultra-defensive play of the visitors. Several days earlier, they played fantastic against champions Corinthans in a friendly match, won by Portuguesa 1-0. They show attacking football and can surprise Palmeiras, even on their stadium.

Real Potosi qualified for the so called Pre-Libertadores round thanks to the second place in the tournament played in first half of 2011. In the second half of the last year, Real did not show the same level of football and even missed the playoffs. During the pause, the team strengthen the lines with three Argentineans, per one in each line. All three of them came from 4th Argentinean division and are expected to start the match. I think this fact says a lot. Real Potosi played two friendly games with city neighbour Nacional, two wins 2-0 and 2-1. But Nacional is relegation candidate and the performance of Real did not satisfy me. The only advantage of the home side is that their stadium is situated 4000m on high altitude. The main striker of the team Yecerotte is suspended, which is big blow for the Bolivians.

Flamengo has taken this visit very seriously. The main squad landed in Bolivia eight days before the match and settled down on another city on high altitude, close to Potosi. They even played a friendly match with the top division club Universitario, won by the Brazilians 1-0. I think Flamengo are well prepared for this visit. The team finished on 3rd place in Brazilian championship last season and the starting line-up is almost the same, only midfielder Thiago Neves is not there. The athmosphere in the squad is complicated, according to the press. The coach Luxemburgo and top team start Ronadinho are not in good relationship, although they show different in front of the public. Anyway, this is the top competition in South America and no one wants to lose, so at least for 90 minutes all will be concentrated upon the match. So far in the pre-season matches, Flamengo are not playing great but should be able to take a minimal lead before the second-leg.

Sao Paulo start the new 2012 year with a home game against Botafogo SP. Last season was very disappointing for the club - 6th place in Serie and no Copa Libertadores in 2012. Sao Paulo has built quiality squad but that is not always enough for a good campaign. We will see what players like Luis Fabiano, Fernandinho, Denilson and Cicero can do, but against today's opponent they should do not have problems. Botafogo SP renewed all regulars and most of the players are not exprienced on such level of football. The team has trained for a month together, which is not so much time to form a united group of players. Sao Paulo's coach promises that his boys are in high form for the first round. Last time when Sau Paulo won the championship was 2005, when  club's currect coach Emerson Leao was on the bench of the team.

The period of state championships in Brazil has already started. It is a time when the giants from Serie A meet unknown rivals, which play their only official matches during this time of the year.

Vasco da Gama start the new season with almost the same squad. The big blow is only striker Elton, who continued his career in Corinthians. Vasco’s coach Cristovao Borges start with almost everything best. The only doubt is on Juninho Pernambunaco, who may not start the game. The most probable line-up look good enough against such opponent. 

Americano finished in 8th position last season in Campeonato Carioca. This season the team does not have much bigger ambitions, except to take a place in Serie D, 4th level in Brazil, next season. The team train together for a month and played six friendlies – 3 wins, a draw and two defeats. Macae was the highest-quality opponent in the pre-season and Americano drew 1-1 then.

Next few weeks will be a real test to the capabilities of Newcaslte. The Magpies have lost two of their best players - topscorer with 15 goals Demba Ba and hard-working midfielder Tiote. So far, we saw Newcastle too dependent on Ba and it would be very difficult to change the whole tactic for several days. Actually, the team has only two healthy strikers - Leon Best and Ameobi. At the same time almost all defenders are fit.

Dimitrov is in great form at the moment. He had excellent Hopman Cup by beating american Fish (number 8 in ranking) and playing great against Berdych. I expect Dimitrov to be one of the good surprises in this year's Australian Open. He is prepared to play even longer matches if he has to. Jeremy Chardy played in New Caledonia and has won the tournament but they faced only against 160+  ATP ranking tennis players. Chardy played on five editions of Australian open in his career - left the tournament four times in first round and once in second round.

Muharraq are the last year's champions of Bahrain. They did not started the season well with only four points in three matches. They had some tough opponents so far as Al Ahli and An Rifa. Muharraq defeated easily by 3-1 Al Najma, their only home match so far. The leaders have 12 points in four matches, so if Muharraq want to back-to-back their title, they must continue to beat.

Manama are opponent on average level, something similar to Al Najma. In the pre-season tournament, Kings Cup, Muharraq defeated Manama by 3-0. It happened three months ago. Later, Muharraq has won the tournament.

Chelsea had their chances against Fulham but managed to end only to 1-1 draw. For this match two important figures are back in the starting XI. Ramires and Drogba will give another face to Chelsea's attack. Ramires can attack the opponent's goal from deep and this brings surprise for the defence of the opponent team.
